How do you budget on a casual or irregular income?

Updated 2026-10-15 · Australia

Short answer

Build your budget around the lowest income you'd normally earn in a pay period, not the average. Pay essential bills in small regular amounts (Moneysmart calls this bill smoothing), and put anything above your base into a buffer account that tops up lean weeks. Once the buffer covers a month of essentials, direct the extra to savings goals.

Step by step

  1. Look at the last 6 months of pay and find your lowest normal fortnight.
  2. Make that your budgeted income.
  3. Cover essentials first: rent, bills, groceries, transport.
  4. Pay bills fortnightly or monthly where you can (bill smoothing).
  5. Anything you earn above the base goes to a buffer account.
  6. Top up from the buffer when a pay comes in under the base.
