Can you budget without linking your bank account?

Updated 2026-10-15 · Australia

Short answer

Yes. Every major Australian bank lets you download your transactions as a CSV file. Import that into a budgeting spreadsheet and you get the same categories and charts as an app — without handing your banking connection to a third party. The trade-off is a two-minute paste each payday instead of automatic syncing.

How budgeting apps connect

Apps either use the Consumer Data Right (CDR), where you consent to an accredited provider receiving your data, or older “screen scraping” methods. Both mean a third party holds ongoing access to your transaction data.

The spreadsheet alternative

  1. Download a CSV from each account (see our bank export guides).
  2. Import it into the spreadsheet.
  3. The spreadsheet categorises and totals it. Your file stays in your own Google Drive or computer.

When an app is still the better choice

If you want real-time notifications or never want to download a file, an app suits you better. If you want control, privacy and no subscription, a spreadsheet wins.

Frequently asked questions

Is CSV export safe?

It's a file on your own device. Treat it like any financial document: don't email it around, and delete old downloads you no longer need.

What happened to Pocketbook and MoneyBrilliant?

Pocketbook was closed by Zip in 2022 and Westpac closed MoneyBrilliant in December 2022. Many former users moved to spreadsheets.

Does Sorted Budget connect to my bank?

No. Nothing connects to your bank and we never see your data.
