Should you include super in your net worth?
Updated 2026-10-15 · Australia
Short answer
Include super in your total net worth — it's genuinely yours — but also track an “accessible” net worth without it, because you generally can't touch super until preservation age. Seeing both stops a rising super balance from hiding that your everyday savings are going backwards.
What to include
| Assets | Debts |
|---|---|
| Bank and offset accounts | Mortgage |
| Super | HECS-HELP |
| Shares and ETFs | Car and personal loans |
| Property (conservative value) | Credit cards and buy now pay later |
| Car (resale value) |
Should HECS count as a debt?
Yes. It's indexed each year (2.8% applied on 1 June 2026) and repaid through the tax system, so it's a real liability even though it has no interest rate in the usual sense.
How often to update
Monthly is enough. Sorted Budget's Net Worth tab has a 12-month grid and chart.
